Published in 1907, this volume was Otto’s first attempt to bridge the purely religious and the purely scientific world views–which were as much in conflict during his time as they are today.  Chapters include “The Religious Interpretation of the World,” “Naturalism,” “Darwinism in General,” and “The World and God,” among other interesting topics.

About the Author

Rudolf Otto (1869-1937) was a German theologian, philosopher, and historian of comparative religion. He is best remembered for his theories of the “numinous”—an adjective to describe the presence of a divinity—elaborated in his influential 1917 masterpiece, The Idea of the Holy. Other works include Mysticism East and West and the posthumously published The Kingdom of God and the Son of Man.
