Parenting takes a village, but is the village worthwhile if the relationships are toxic? In this essential, practical guide, mental health expert Dr. Noëlle Santorelli explores the phenomenon of relational aggression and offers advice and support for disengaging from the unhealthy dynamics created by modern motherhood culture.

Modern motherhood has quietly become a high-stakes social system where inclusion, reputation, and access function like currency—and where subtle forms of relational aggression shape who feels safe, seen, and included. This is a truth most moms feel, but rarely feel safe enough to say out loud.

Drawing on her work as a clinical psychologist and mother of three who has navigated these dynamics firsthand, Dr. Noëlle Santorelli reveals how competition, surveillance, and the pressure to secure children’s futures reshape women’s behavior in public spaces, creating toxic mom groups. What is commonly dismissed as “mean girl” behavior is revealed to be a predictable adaptation to this culture: a public, competitive arena where worth is performed, identity is tied to outcomes, and belonging feels fragile. Under these conditions, ordinary social stress is converted into socially sanctioned aggression—not because women are cruel, but because the system rewards status symbols, control over access, and deniable forms of power.

Blending personal experience with professional insight, Mean Girl Moms examines the emotional and relational cost of surviving inside these dynamics—on women, families, and communities—and offers grounded, realistic tools for making different choices, and makes room for different parenting styles and needs. This is not an indictment of “bad moms,” but a roadmap for understanding the system and modeling a healthier way forward for the next generation. Mean Girl Moms  gives women the language to understand what they’re experiencing, the clarity to stop blaming themselves, and the courage to step out of social systems that trade authenticity for status so they can reclaim connection, confidence, and peace.
