From the bestselling author of The Myth of You and Me comes an untraditional romance, following two archaeologists and the decades-long connection that binds them together even as life keeps them apart, perfect for fans of Coco Mellors and Lily King.

At 20, two aspiring archeologists discover that love is not, in fact, all you need. With a famous father who both mentored and belittled her, archaeologist Caroline O’Rourke knows how painful love can be when it’s not rooted in understanding. For his part, Paul Desruelles has learned from childhood how destabilizing love can be when you fear someone will leave.

Connected by their respected archaeological programs before their first field season, Paul and Caroline fall for each other, it doesn’t matter that he’s French and she’s American, that their different languages sometimes get in the way. Together at an archaeological site, though, they find their love in conflict with what they want from life. Caroline invests deeply in her career, while Paul longs for a stable family.

Over and over for thirty years, they meet and say goodbye, unable to find a way to be together. As the excavation enters its final year, Caroline and Paul must face what they mean to each other or risk parting for good.
